Anu’s Profile

Anu is an experienced acupuncturist providing acupuncture treatments in the West end of Edinburgh. She graduated from the Northern College of Acupuncture in York in 2007 and is a member of the British Acupuncture Council which is the UK’s professional body for the practice of traditional acupuncture.

Her treatment approach includes acupuncture, acupressure massage, tuina (a Chinese massage done fully clothed), cupping (suction cups placed on skin to help blood flow – who can forget the pictures of Gwyneth Paltrow with her backless dress!), and moxibustion (a form of heat therapy using the herb moxa over the skin). She also provides dietary and lifestyle advice to allow individuals to optimise and maintain the beneficial effects of their treatment.

As traditional acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms, it can be effective for a wide range of conditions from physical to emotional. Therefore, Anu treats all kinds of health issues and adopts a relaxed, gentle and holistic approach whilst trying to get to the root of the issue.

Anu is interested in pain management, enhancing overall well-being, fertility issues, pregnancy and women’s health. These interests developed from her patients who have taught her a lot by sharing their experiences. Additionally she is interested in the role that traditional Chinese medicine plays in complementing western medicine.

Anu has also trained in facial revitalisation acupuncture which is also referred to as facial acupuncture or cosmetic acupuncture. This is gaining popularity and is a safe and effective way to help reduce the signs of the ageing process and bring life into the face by improving skin texture and colouring, increasing elasticity, reducing wrinkles and overall rejuvenation.

Anu is also a qualified dietitian and has worked in the NHS as a clinical dietitian where she gained experience in various specialities. She has also worked as a research dietitian at the University of Edinburgh for six years.

Anu loves to learn and apply her learning to her clinical work. She regularly attends courses, conferences and workshops to keep her up to date and ensure her brain keeps ticking.

Anu works at Alva St on a Thursday and you can contact her on 07515431070 or e-mail her at

Who has Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages from babies to older adults.

Many people come to acupuncture with specific issues like aches and pain in the joints, neck and back pain, headaches, osteoarthritis of the knee, insomnia, hormonal issues, menopause, gynaecology and fertility issues, as well as treatment to support an IVF cycle and during pregnancy. Some use acupuncture because they feel generally unwell but have no obvious diagnosis. Others choose acupuncture as a preventative measure or simply to enhance their feeling of well-being or to help their anxiety and low mood.

More recently cosmetic acupuncture seems to be gaining popularity worldwide. However, this treatment has been practiced for over 2000 years by the Chinese who have known that beauty originates from the inside. It works by helping to tighten and tone facial muscle thus reducing sagging skin as well as improving blood circulation and minimising lines. Those who have tried facial acupuncture do comment on having smoother, softer and vibrant complexion as well as an overall sense of well-being. Needles are inserted into the body as well as the face and the needles used on the face are smaller and finer than the ones used on the body and the ‘less is more’ approach is followed – we do not stick hundreds of needles into the face! As a guide, usually a difference is visible by session 6. For further information, contact Anu for more details.

“Acupuncture may not address all ills, but over the last four years with Anu I have had successful treatment for knee problems, a dislocated finger, tennis elbow, scar reduction and most importantly to me, both chronic and acute headaches and cluster headaches.”

“I wish I had visited Anu for acupuncture sooner!  I had been in constant, agonizing pain for 5 months and intermittent pain for the previous 2 years, I had visited numerous doctors, hospitals and even had an operation but nothing had helped.  I had never been for acupuncture before and when three separate people recommended it I decided to see if it would help. I initially felt quite nervous but Anu put me at ease immediately.  She asked me about my health, about the pain I was in, about my lifestyle, about how I was feeling emotionally.  She was so easy to talk to, even just talking to her I felt soothed. After the first acupuncture session with Anu, the pain had reduced by about 50% – I was amazed.  After 4 sessions (one per week), I was completely pain free.  This felt incredible – why had I not gone sooner?  I am now pain-free about 98% of the time – if I get twinges I go back to Anu for an occasional top up session.  I always feel better afterwards.”

“I started seeing Anu about 5 months ago after suffering for many months with chronic fatigue and digestive problems leading to weight loss. After a couple of months of treatment my energy levels were so improved I felt like a new person, eager to get on with my life again. My digestive problems have also improved markedly. I continue to see Anu intermittently for ‘top-up’ treatments which keep me in good form. Well worth it. Highly recommended!”
