Sharayah is a counsellor and psychotherapist here in Edinburgh, with experience of working with individuals from diverse backgrounds in short and long-term therapy.
I am a qualified counsellor with a Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy from Edinburgh University, where I was trained in both the person-centred and psychodynamic approach. My work is primarily informed by the psychodynamic approach, in which we explore how past experiences and relationships are influencing choices, values, beliefs and relationships with others in the present. Having said that, my sessions are led by you as the client, as I believe you are the expert in your internal world. My role is to facilitate you; in a safe and non-judgemental space, to explore what may be going on for you and how it may be effecting you. I believe in the importance of a trusting relationship and that this is the foundation for therapy. Through empathy and containment, I hope to enable you to explore the edges that may feel painful and uncomfortable, as to empower change.
After a degree in Psychology, my experience has been working in the field of acute mental health with adults and young people. I then pursued becoming a counsellor, in which I have worked with a wide range of psychological and emotional issues including: bullying and harassment in the work place, low self-esteem, anxiety and panic attacks, depression, relationship issues, sexuality and intimacy, gender identity and transitioning, grief and loss, trauma, complex trauma and PTSD, abuse, cultural issues, change, anger management, and addiction.
If you would like to find out more about working with me I suggest an initial appointment. Starting therapy can sometimes feel a bit daunting so this initial meeting can support you to find out more about me and the process before you decide if it is the right step for you at the current time. I look forward to hearing from you.
